Whisky Fine Art Gallery

The Whisky Art Gallery opened in January, 2008 and is located in the Historic Quarter of Oamaru in the former NZ Loan and Mercantile building. Built in 1882, to the design of Dennison and Grant, this elegantly detailed, three storey Victorian warehouse was built for NZ Loan and Mercantile Company when it was the largest stock and station agency in New Zealand. Currently, the ground floor is home to the Loan and Merc Restaurant (Fleur's other place) and the middle floor houses hundreds of barrels of maturing whisky, lending to the galleries name and unique aroma of whisky, sea breeze and aged building.

The Whisky Art Gallery is located on the top floor with a stunning outlook to the Oamaru Harbor and Penguin colony.

About the Loan and Mercantile Building

Built as a grain store in 1882 to a design by Dennison and Grant, the Loan and Mercantile building is a three storey Victorian warehouse that was built for the NZ Loan and Mercantile when it was the largest stock and station agency in New Zealand. The building was designed to hold 100,000 sacks of grain handled by four grain elevators. The end wall has been left with its quions jutting outwards to key in a future addition. The Loan and Mercantile building is owned by the Whitestone Civic Trust who own many of the Victorian buildings located around the Loan and Mercantile.

Photos of the Gallery Space

The gallery takes up the entire top floor of the Loan and Mercantile building. The space is divided into two rooms measuring a total of 1,260 square metres. From the entrance at the top of the stairs, you first walk into the larger of the two rooms which takes up almost three quarters of the space. This room is filled with large paintings and wall hangings. On your right (on entering the floor) is the entrance to the smaller (but still very large) room. This room features additional paintings but also smaller items including jewellery and pottery. The counter is also located in this room.
